Hellbound II has High and Lows

Hellbound Vol II is interesting because it's a focused anthology with a dedicated production staff and a list of contributors that doesn't stray too far from the Boston Comics Roundtable. With regard to the former, the organization of this anthology shows in the high production values and the sense of continuity in terms of design, which is owed to editor Jesse Lonergan and editor/designer Roho. From the stark yellow cover to the sharply-lettered table of contents, Hellbound 2 is a pleasant object to peruse.

BOSTON, April 21—The Boston Comics Roundtable and Ninth Art Press announce the publication of “Hellbound II,” an anthology of all-new horror comics by artists and writers from greater Boston. The paperback edition will be on sale at the annual Boston Comic Con on April 21st and 22nd, at the MoCCA Festival in New York on September 28th and 29th, at selected comics shops in the region, and online.

“Hellbound II” was edited by Roundtable member Jesse Lonergan, who latest graphic novel, “Joe and Azat,” was among the notable titles listed in “Best American Comics 2011.” It was designed and produced by the Uruguayan-born cartoonist known only as Roho, whose work has appeared regularly in the “Boston Weekly Dig.”

“Hellbound II” features twelve chilling and horrifying tales in comics form, with additional art in a variety of styles. In all, it features the work of twenty-three artists and writers. These tales range from
Joshua Hoaglund’s “Mount Auburn Night,” about creatures in the famed Mount Auburn Cemetery, to Gabriel Robinson’s “The Red Calf,” inspired by a Scandinavian folktale, and Gregery Miller’s “Nostalgia,” which grew from childhood imagination.

Reviewers have already praised “Hellbound II” for how such short comics can be so scary. At spandexless.com, which reviews non-superhero comics, David Anderson wrote of these tales, “Some are funny, some are creepy, almost all of them made me go ‘holy s**t.’ There’s a lot of talent  condensed into this volume, both in terms of writing and art.”

Jen Vaughn of the Schulz Library at the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont wrote: “Often the failing of a horror anthology is that you read WITH the intention of being scared and, thus, thumb through the pages bravely. A well-written comic is not necessarily terrifying until at night, it twists itself in the dark of your room, and you can suddenly recall images. . . . ‘Hellbound 2’ is perfect for the horror fan.”

The comics in “Hellbound II” come in a variety of styles. For “The Plague,” written by Patrick Flaherty, artist E. J. Barnes used scratchboard, and the “Cambridge Chronicle” said, “The resulting
images for the story are dark, detailed and textured.” In “Breath of Life,” Clayton McCormack used heavy inks to replicate the mood of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories. Caitlin Plovnick’s “Eye Contact” may look like a light-hearted newspaper cartoon, but could be the most frightening
story of all.

“RobMeBlind.com” by J. L. Bell and Andy Wong looks at the new horrors embedded in social media while Logan Faerber’s “Grampire” considers how an elderly vampire gets his daily blood. “Dolly” by Lindsay Moore and Alex Cormack conjures up the horror films of the 1990s. Ansis Purins’s “Zombre” and John Hillard’s “Eugene” offer new takes on notorious monsters, and “Necrocomicon” by Nathan Kitler and Jerel Dye unfolds at the horror that might lurk in a comic book itself.

“Hellbound II” made its first appearance on Halloween 2011 in an Art Edition, with covers of hand-crafted paper and a screen-printed presentation box, limited to 25 copies. The new edition is a
traditional, 96-page paperback at the affordable price of $10.00, with all the scares and chills of the original.

Robot 6 read Hellbound II

"On my way down to MoCCA, I read Hellbound #2, a black-and-white anthology of short horror comics by members of the Boston Comics Roundtable. The craftsmanship in this volume is impressive, especially given that none of the creators are full-time cartoonists. John Hilliard’s “Eugene” is the story of a hairy, vampire-like monster stalking innocent victims, but the cheerful storytelling style makes it seem charming–right up until the surprise ending. Joshua D. Hoagland’s “Mt. Auburn Night,” set in the Cambridge cemetery, is a beautiful romp of skeletons and gravestone statuary, drawn with strong blacks and white in a style reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley. Both are wordless stories (well, “Eugene” has one word balloon) that use strong visuals and creative panel layouts to pull the reader in and tell the story. I have to mention “Robmeblind.com,” written by my MoCCA travel companion J.L. Bell and drawn by Andy Wong, a clever story about burglars who use the web to scout out potential victims."

Dig This: Hellbound 2

This week's Weekly Dig  recommends or latest issue on their Dig This  section. While we appreciate the inclusion on the issue before tomorrow's Boston Comic Con there is a few bits of information that may not be completely accurate. I think Bill had in mind our Art Edition when he wrote the review, which has been out since last Halloween. We will be releasing our "Regular" Edition this weekend at the convention floor, and next week to local stores. Our Editor was Jesse Lonergan (but I encourage everyone to call him Jess from now on) and the new edition is being published by Ninth Art Press. However all the praise and compliments are 100% accurate and we appreciate them very much.

Meanwhile, in Boston, a group of cartoonists meet up weekly to discuss, critique and create comics. The Boston Comics Roundtable has created many an anthology from their Massachusetts (maybe we should say New England) talent base for the Inbound series based on subjects like Boston history and the ever-popular food.

Recently, the Schulz Library received the artist edition of Hellbound 2, a horror anthology, created by Roho and BCR members. The group returns to its zine roots for this collection, complete with beautifully handmade paper, rubber stamps and hand-bound box for the two books. The stories are short and sweet, the filler illustrations make you beg for a full story. Often the failing of a horror anthology is that you read WITH the intention of being scared and thus, thumb through the pages bravely. A well-written comic is not necessarily terrifying until at night, it twists itself in the dark of your room, and you can suddenly recall images.

A particular story that follows that logic is RobMeBlind.com, which is about thieves who utilize location-based smart phone apps to figure out when people are gone from their homes. The clever crafting by J.L. Bell and Andy Wong left me awake blinking at my ceiling (possibly at the easy ability people have of giving away information for temporary celebrity). And the dark woodcut panels of E.J. Barnes in Patrick Flaherty’s story The Plague exemplify a great use of comics to set the mood for the story. Hellbound 2 is perfect for the horror fan or lover of hand-made objects, especially if those objects are a skin suit made from their victims.

Binding Session

The last step (or next to last) on the assembly of our annual horror anthology was the binding. We reserved the familiar grounds of the Rosa Parks room at the Democracy Center on a Tuesday evening and proceeded to put the book together on an assembly line style.
