A few weeks ago we journey into the northern lands of New Hampshire to Screen Print the Box that will contain the Evil that is Hellbound 2. At the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester, under the guidance of Joel Gill we proceeded to lay ink on handmade paper and let the spirits bond it to it.

Here Joel feeds the hungering loom with a mix of unspeakable pigments while Jesse Lonergan quietly and reverently summons the local specters to protect the previously hand made paper.

In addition to having a beater, mixer, 20 ton press, and drying system, along with a vacuum table, vats, and moulds, they also offer workshops, custom classes, pulp beating, one on one instruction and studio rental.

The Beginning is the End is the Beginning:
Original pencils by Roho. Inked by me. This may be the cover to Hellbound #2.
Everything was done in Corel Painter 12 using the the pen tools. Scratchboard tool for the majority of the line work, scratchboard rake for mass cross hatching, and flat colors for spot blacks. These pens are also available in Painter 11 (and probably further back then that). Since the original pencils were sent to me at 600ppi I had to increase my brush sizes (Scratchboard tool: 24px; Scratchboard rake: 8px). Scratchboard rake takes some practice to yield lines that are the right thickness for the resolution. I favour decreasing the pressure sensitivity on the wacom tablet even though it means I'll have to do that many more strokes to get dark areas.
Note that the rake doesn't yield pure blacks. Since all lines are anti-aliased unless you're using a 1-bit bitmap (which I never do) it's not a huge problem unless you're one of those inkers that want every stroke to be pure black ink or have a very precise printing requirement. It's easy to over do it, but that's what layers and erasers are for.

This Hellbound piece and the one before it marks a return to a style that experimented with in my early 1990s B&W work. Back then I was an inexperienced artist and I did not have digital tools. A piece inked this way with real ink is very susceptible to over rendering. Alternately, it required such careful planning that it was just too time consuming. In truth, I also spent a lot of time adding lines where there need not be to hide underlying weaknesses in the drawings themselves.
When I got back into comics and illustration seriously again I ditched my old habits that weren't producing work of a quality I wanted. I explored simplified and super clean styles with varying levels of success. You can still see I there. There's not yet a uniformity to line work as I bring in several different schools of thought in inking at once. More practice needed.
I wouldn't say that I'm in love with the cross hatched style of the last few pieces I've done, but it's interesting that I'm exploring my 'roots' again and finding new ways of applying an old technique. Over the last year I've spent a greater portion of my art time experimenting with different looks and techniques than ever before. It's funny how despite all that I still find it very natural to draw this way even though I never had a real body of work that used this technique for aforementioned reasons. One of the reasons I looked around to cleaner styles was an effort to speed production times, but the ironic thing about that is that it usually took more effort to ensure clean lines and strip details then for my brain to go on auto-pilot and spew forth tone. I wonder if this is how other artists find and settle on their styles. Only time and another hundred drawings or so will tell I guess.

Hellbound 2 Pin Up:
"It's more than a little bit early for Halloween, but here's a filler picture I submitted for Hellbound 2 the horror comic anthology being put together by fellow Boston Comics Roundtable members. A couple weeks ago the Hellbound editors announced they wanted some pin ups. The only real rules that I got where 6"x9", B&W, and no vampires. Out of the classic movie monsters I've always favored mummies so I just had to give this a shot.

I'm not a fan of doing B&W work since I very much thrive on tone and colour. B&W rejects all I find really fun about finishing a piece. I went back to my fine hatching style as I needed a way to get some contrast between the bands of cloth wrap and our explorer's clothing. I also found it difficult to get samples and tips about drawing dark skinned people using just B&W. Again, the female mummy not being just white was essential for contrast. Finally I decided to go with the black background to further define the foreground so as not to make a bigger mess with the hieroglyphics.
Mummy trivia: The headpiece on my mummy is modeled off the helm Zita Johann wore in the final scene of the 1932 The Mummy movie.
Corel Painter tip: Scratchboard Rake brush is awesome for doing cross-hatch inking quickly. That's what I used on the explorer's jacket. The background glyphs used a hard charcoal brush to try and give them a rougher sandy look which is admittedly difficult to see in this reduced image."

Nathan Kitler closes out Hellbound with the quintessential New England story of fear and death: the Salam Witch Trials. Was the ironically named Sara Good unjustly targeted because she was poor and ungrateful? Or did she curse those townsfolk who failed to remain in her favor? Was Reverend Nicolas Noyes a just man, a servant of God, when he investigated the claims against her? Or did he succumb to an intolerant and fearful mob and saw evil where there was none?

Do you want me to tell you? Are you sure? Nathan went to a lot of effort. He did an excellent job. Trust me, it’s bloody good! (Come on, it had be written! You would have done the same!)

About the creator:

Nathan originated in the spooky suburbs of Connecticut, drawing cartoons and illustrating greeting cards. He later surfaced at Wheaton College, where he made editiorial cartoons for the student newspaper.

About the creator:

Born in New York City; spent the latter part of my wonder years in New Hampshire. My first memorable childhood gift was a box of 64 Crayola crayons (with the built-in sharpener). As a kid I always drew: cartoon characters, animals, comic book heroes, dinosaurs, spaceships-all the good stuff! Ignoring the concerned looks on my parents’ faces I eventually went to an art school, the Rhode Island School of Design, and graduated with a BFA degree in Illustration. After a few years of working in a graphic design studio in New Hampshire, I started my own business illustrating ads, logos, magazines, newspapers, posters, books and the occasional cartoon character, spaceship or comic book hero. Pukwudgies’ features resemble those of a human, but with enlarged nose, fingers, and ears. Their skin is described as being grey, smooth, and at times has been know to glow. They are notorious tricksters and are never to be trusted!!”

About the creators:

Ché Salazar is from the South Shore of Massachusetts, and grew up with the book The Good Giants and the Bad Pukwudgies. His comics have appeared in The First Transmission of the MCC, The Ska-Vengers, and Inbound 4 : A Comic Book History of Boston. He will be launching his webcomics platform, www.production3c.com, sometime in November.

Andrew Abbott is a local illustrator and animator who graduated from the Art Institute of Boston. He is originally from Annapolis, MD but moved up to the Allston/ Brighton area after graduating. He works at the Million Year Picnic Comic Book Shop in Harvard Square surrounded by one of his true loves, comic books. He also loves cheesy horror movies and counts them as one of the great influences in his work. Yes, it’s important for the local economy but as Massachusetts resident, where to do you go for a vacation from them? How about Dogtown? Cape Anne’s hidden gem has a historic history of wild dogs, suicides, outcasts, pirate treasure, hiking, inspirational boulder carvings, and witch queens. Tell them Thomazine Younger sent you! (It’s a sign of respect. You’ll still need to pay her toll. Everyone pays the toll… one way or the other.)

Nathan Boucher grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts so as a child he drew on aluminum siding with ball point pens. As an adult he jumped around, landed in Fairbanks, Alaska doing comics for the Fairbanks Square, and finally bounced back to Allston, MA to stay close to family. About the creator:
Nikolaus Gulacsik was probably born on December 17, 1980 at Boone County General Hospital in Booneville, Missouri. We say probably due to the consistent presence of forged and dubious documentation among his immediate family. His parents were believed spies of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. They met a suspicious end in a car accident in 1984, leaving their child to the American foster care system. Nikolaus grew up in Michigan, Florida, Kansas and Pennsylvania. He began drawing comics during one of many stays in juvenile detention facilities as an adolescent. A persistent Gulacsik got his GED in 1999 and enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned degrees in English Literature and Philosophy, graduating in 2003. Since moving to Boston sometime during 2004, he has been consistently involved in making art and living dangerously. At the time of producing "It Crawled from the Swamp", he was employed by R. About the creator:
Jesse Lonergan (Jessus lonerganorius) is a migratory songbird of the thrush family. Jesse Lonergan is widely distributed throughout North America, but is primarily found in the vicinity of Boston, Massachusetts. He is the state bird of California, Illinois, and Vermont and has seven subspecies all of which reside exclusively in his own mind. His diet consists of invertebrates (such as beetle grubs and caterpillars) and he is one of the first bird species to draw comic books, beginning to illustrate shortly after hatching. His nest consists of long coarse grass, pens, pencils, erasers, P.G. Wodehouse books, a baseball glove, a guitar, twigs, paper, and feathers.

About the creator:

Line O was a Lady in Black during the height of the gloomy 1980’s Copenhagen Goth scene, and has probably scared a person or two. Italian painter, Vittoriano Delgado tried in vain to teach her about fine arts, but during the time in which she was supposed to study Picasso’s genius, Line drew underground comics that largely revolved around drugs, sex and Dead Kennedys. In the 1990’s she moved back to her native Norway to study the more marketable subjects of philosophy and English literature, until a tall, handsome American lured her away to his native New England in 2000. She eventually stumbled upon the Boston Comics Roundtable, and surrounded by all the creative energy of this group, she dusted off her old nib pens and resumed her interest in making comics. A House with a Past by E.J. Barnes

Boston is a city of history but not all history finds it way into text books or Duck Tours. In a state synonymous with witch burnings and 86 year old curses, writer and artist E.J. Barnes investigates the questionable ancestry of a Massachusetts home. Did the previous owners engage in highly questionable practices? Were they demonic or pharmaceutical in nature? With the housing market being such a beast, they should have just said no.

E. J. Barnes is a comic writer and artist, painter, gag and political cartoonist, and animator. Her cartoons have appeared in Funny Times and Fortean Times. In 2009 she received an award from the New England Newspaper and Press Association for illustration work she did for the (Greenfield, MA) Recorder. Her comic work includes Blaster Al Ackerman's Tales of the Ling Master, an adaptation of the short stories of humorist "Blaster" Al Ackerman. She collaborated with Patrick Flaherty on a short comic piece for the Boston Comics Roundtable's anthology Inbound #5. She lives in Cambridge and has experienced nothing supernatural in her current residence.

I wasn’t the original blogger asked to review this story. The first one claimed he wouldn’t lower himself to even read a story featuring clowns. He was loud about it; didn’t care if Eric knew. Yeah, that was a wise move. We haven’t seen or heard from him since.
I, on the other hand, know better. Read Eric’s story. Tell him you love it. Give him money in appreciation. It’s for your own good. Trust me. You don’t want to make Eric angry. He knows clowns; lots of them. AND they’re very NICE people. Not EVIL at all and you would be a fool and an idiot to think otherwise. The clowns are very fond of Eric. They listen to him.

HELL is Everywhere!

As you can see we have a new format, you can easily find information about our upcoming Halloween Party by clicking on the PARTY button on this blog's header. Also we will be publishing a series of Spotlights on the HELLBOUND #1 stories you will be able to find the index on the COMICS tab.

If you where at the New York Comic Con this weekend there was a copy of HELLBOUND: The Collectors Edition parading around the aisles thanks to Jaime and EJ Barnes (A House with a Past).

Next week there will be a copy at the New England Comic Con and on the west cost at APE (San Fransisco, CA) you can find Dan Mazur (What Really Hapened to Betty and Barney Hill) or Jesse Lonergan (Sweet Dreams.

I know what you’re thinking and it’s not what happened to Betty and Barney Hill, but who are Betty and Barney Hill? “I don’t know any Betty and Barney Hill.” But you do! Before there was Roy Neary’s mad trek to Devil’s Tower, Wyoming, there was Betty and Barney Hill fateful drive home through northern New Hampshire. What began as innocent vacation lead to two lost hours that will for ever change how we look at the night sky and those stars that seem… to be following us… as we drive. Why settle for Spielberg’s made up close encounters when you can witness the real thing!

About the creator:

Dan Mazur grew up in and still lives in Cambridge Massachusetts, interrupted by a 23-year visit to Los Angeles, which he sometimes considers "missing time." He writes, draws comics, and is available for alien abductions.
His strip "Canyon Comics" ran in the Topanga Messenger for 5 years, and his comics have appeared in the anthologies Inbound (which he also co-edits), Outbound and I Saw You. He is the creator of the webcomic, "Palindramas.

The Screen-printing Process

The past 6 weeks or so I have been editing collecting, and since early this week screen printing the stories that will be part of HellBound True Horror, Urban Legends, and Creepy Stories from New England. This past week I have a number few people from the Boston Comics Roundtable come up and help with the printing process. We we able to get a few pages done. I hope that the project takes no longer than a 4 or 6 weeks. Pictured below are Jim Roldan, and the two Steves, Steve Cartisano, and Steve Polakiewicz.

As you prepare for the submission deadline there are a couple of things to consider:

1. We would like for these stories to be all ages or at least PG ( stay away from the F-Bomb)
2. We want the stories to be based on real events, and yes that does mean you can include stories that you heard first hand.
3. If you have question or you want my advise please send thumbnails of pages along with scripts.
4. The stories can be serious or comical either way utilize the red in some way.
5. THIS IS IMPORTANTAll those that are accepted into HellBound will help put the artist book together. That means taking the bus to NH ( an hour ride) and helping out over a weekend either printing or binding the artist book.

It may turn out that the book needs to be smaller, but that should not effect your image quality. If you are picture with out a story or a story without pictures please post to the BCR google group with HellBound in the subject lines to see if you can find a match.

Submission Rules for Hellbound #1

Limited to 24 one-page stories.
One over-sized page each (tabloid size 14"x20").
Screen printed in two inks (black and glow in the dark red).
Horror stories based on New England murders, urban legends, ghost stories and creepy tales.
A hand-bound, signed and numbered over-sized artist book edition will be released at the Hellbound event.
This Limited Edition will be auctioned at this event only!

Finished pages must be black, red and white and can be submitted digitally beginning March 1st. It is recommended to work on a size equal or bigger than tabloid (14"x20").
24 local creators will be selected will participate in the printing and binding process.

Deadline: April 1 2010.
